CPC LAUNCHING RACIAL PROFILING & POLICE DISCRIMINATION HOTLINE

We at the Colorado Progressive Coalition know that racial profiling is a problem all across Colorado.  In 2000 CPC surveyed 350 individuals, mostly people of color, in Denver's Cole neighborhood.  Of the 350 people 69% said they had been stopped or detained because of their race.  When asked whether or not they had been charged with a violation at the time or detained without explanation, 75% said they had not been charged with a violation and were detained without explanation.

CPC's report and winning legislative organizing campaign led to the passage of House Bill 2001-1114, with a lead sponsor of now State Senate President Peter Groff, which required data collection on all traffic stops conducted by the Denver Police and Colorado State Patrol.  Now, for every local, county, and state law enforcement agency in the state, police officers are now required to distribute their business cards at all stops not resulting in tickets.  These cards must include the officer's badge number and a phone number to call for complaints or compliments.

What are we doing about it?
In light of recent anti-immigrant attacks, recent racial profiling complaints we have received from community members across Colorado,  and many law enforcement agencies continuing resistance to addressing racial profiling and aggressive policing, the Colorado Progressive Coalition has reinstated it’s Racial Profiling and Police Discrimination Hotline.  The hotline will allow community members to report incidents, seek assistance filing complaints with law enforcement agencies, and - depending on the nature of the incident - seek possible legal assistance.

If you would like to report a racial profiling incident please call:
If you believe that you have been the victim of police discrimination and racial profiling - or know someone else who has - we encourage you to call the hotline, report the incident, and be heard.
