CPC Greeley/Weld County Chapter Newsletter
Posted March 6, 2008

Dear Greeley Weld CPC Members and Supporters,

As many of you know, we’ve had an exciting beginning to our 2008 campaigns, both locally and state-wide!  Some highlights:

  • Our Greeley/Evans voter registration efforts have started off strong, with over 100 people registered by more than a dozen volunteers

  • Our first Chapter Meeting of the year welcomed new and returning participants ready to get involved

  • We’ve begun spreading the word about our up-and-running state-wide Racial Profiling Hotline, as well as our work to protect Equal Opportunity by opposing a November ballot initiative that would eliminate Equal Opportunity for women and people of color in public contracting, employment, and higher education admissions in Colorado

  • And we’re gearing up for our first Racial Profiling Task Force meeting later this month!

We’re off to a great start, and need your help to continue building progressive power in our community!  Below is a list of upcoming volunteer opportunities, meeting dates, and other exciting events.  And look for this regular, bi-weekly online newsletter to keep you informed!

In solidarity,

Angie Diaz & Nicole Hurt, CPC Northern Colorado Community Organizers
Holly Nazzaro, UNC Intern

Voter Registration Volunteer Dates/Times:

We need your help to reach our goal of registering 2,600 new voters in Greeley/Weld County this year!  We’ll be registering voters at local grocery stores, businesses, and clinics, as well as going door-to-door.  We have several dates already planned for this month, and would love to see you join us for as many shifts as you can!   We’ll meet at our Greeley office (1403 2nd Street), and will begin with a short (20-30 min.) training for any volunteers who need it:

          Sat. March 8th @ 10am
            Sun. March 9th @ 1pm
            Sat. March 22nd @ 10am
            Sun. March 23rd @ 1pm

Please contact Angie with questions, or for directions (Office: 970/378-6560;

Equal Opportunity Coalition Meeting – Wednesday March 26th, 5:30-6:30pm at our Greeley office (1403 2nd Street)

This will be a short, informational meeting about the devastating potential consequences of a November ballot initiative attacking Equal Opportunity programs and what we can do to defend Equal Opportunity throughout the state.  It will also cover basic facts and myths, and how we can help educate our community on this important issue.

Taste of the World Event – Thursday March 27th, 5-8pm, UNC McCowen Hall (free; donations accepted at the door)

Sponsored by UNC’s Summit Organizing Committee and supported by the Cultural Centers, this event promotes diversity and understanding through shared food, performance, and brief presentations.  CPC will be giving a brief presentation about our 2008 campaigns, and we will be registering voters at this event!  For more information, or to sign up to volunteer with voter registration, call Angie or email Holly Nazzaro, our dedicated UNC student intern (nazz3471@blue.unco.edu).

Kickoff Racial Profiling Task Force Meeting – Monday March 31st, 7-8pm at our Greeley office (1403 2nd Street)

This Task Force was created at our first Chapter Meeting to work on spreading the word about our state-wide Racial Profiling Hotline in as many ways as possible, coordinating Know Your Rights trainings for youth and immigrants, and connecting this work to future efforts to ensure police accountability.  For more information, email Nicole (nhurtcpc@gmail.com)

Summit on Social Justice and Diversity – Wednesday April 2nd, 8:30am-5pm at UNC University Center, Panorama Room (free)

Keynote and panel discussions throughout the day on several important social justice issues, with a break for lunch.  CPC will have a table for voter registration and other information.  For more information, or to volunteer email Holly (nazz3471@blue.unco.edu)
