GOOD CALL
By letters@rmchronicle.com
I read with interest your article entitled “Hate Thy Neighbor” (October 9, feature). I want to thank the Chronicle for printing the article and allowing Mr. Pittman’s incredible, but not as much out-of-the-ordinary as we may want, story to be heard.
As Mr. Pittman’s experiences so vividly demonstrate, racial profiling and discrimination by the police are very much alive and well in Larimer County and in Fort Collins. Following the passage of a new state law on racial profiling in 2001, Colorado Progressive Coalition (CPC), the organization for whom I work, received a sizable number of calls from Fort Collins and Larimer County residents who had experienced police racial profiling.
That’s why the Colorado Progressive Coalition is launching a statewide racial profiling hotline. CPC has historically worked on racial profiling issues, and in 2001 we led the campaign to pass the law mentioned above. We seek greater police accountability to the community on racial profiling issues and are launching this hotline in response to aggressive policing statewide, criminalization of immigrants for their very existence and the continued need for police accountability to each of us in our communities.
We will be recording people’s experiences, assisting people with filing complaints in their communities and, when needed, making legal referrals. If you would like to learn more, please call us at 866-329-0908. The hotline will launch in November, and we welcome your support.
