Campaign for Economic Justice Program

WELCOME TO CPC'S CAMPAIGN FOR ECONOMIC JUSTICE!
Colorado
Progressive Coalition's Campaign for Economic Justice works for the prioritization of public investment in education, health care, and human services (not more prisons and roads) and to build a statewide coalition of people and organizations to fight tax, fiscal and budget policy that comes at the expense of low and middle-income Coloradans.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR GRASSROOTS LEADERSHIP TO ROLLBACK TABOR IN 2005
In 2005, CPC was nationally recognized by the Center for American Progress for playing a key role in scaling back the devastating TABOR law through a successful door-to-door campaign to talk face to face with 52,000 unlikely voters in racially and economically diverse neighborhoods about how TABOR hurts real Coloradans.

A LEAD ROLE IN WINNING COLORADO'S MINIMUM WAGE RAISE IN 2006
In 2006, CPC also played a lead role in raising Colorado's minimum wage to $6.85/hour (and indexed to inflation!) for the first time in 10 years by gathering more signatures than any other organization, knocking on 121,719 doors and making 26,684 calls in 130 Aurora, Denver, and Pueblo precincts to inspire low- and middle-income voters to get out and vote.  Our work - and that of our coalition partners - led to a pay raise for an estimated 138,000 low-wage Coloradans!

2007 TOP PRIORITY:  WINNING AN EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT FOR LOW-INCOME COLORADANS
Currently, the Campaign for Economic Justice is building statewide grassroots support with community members, service providers, faith leaders, and business owners, to push the Colorado legislature to make the state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) permanent at 20% of the federal credit.  The EITC is a refundable tax credit that reimburses tax dollars to hardworking families and is seen as one of the most effective anti-poverty policy measures.

MAKING COLORADO'S EITC PERMANENT BENEFITS 250,000 COLORADANS
Unfortunately, the state EITC is tied to the suffocating TABOR amendment of the state constitution.  As a result, no one has received a state EITC since 2001, and it will not be available until at least 2011.  The Campaign for Economic justice is working to correct this failed policy by making the state EITC permanent, and expanding the program to 20% of the federal EITC.  When CPC and our coalition partners are successful in winning a permanent, expanded EITC, 250,000 of our lowest-income Colorado neighbors will benefit and that's good for everyone in our state!
